The reading assistant application is to assist children to read physical books with less or no guidance from the guardian. This application is run on an android device. The feature of this system includes scanning book pages, and the application will read it aloud for the children, record voice and view word definition. Some of the problems with existing reading assistant applications that the project will be addressed are the children's only limit to choose of books provided by the application. In another word the children do not get a freedom of choice to choose the book that they want to read which is one of the factors that increase childrens’ interest in reading books. In addition, parents or guardians cannot be able to read to the children all the time due to their responsibilities and priorities. Therefore, with optical character recognition or OCR feature together with text-to-speech feature, the application can assist the children to read their physical books. ReadAlong by Google, Microsoft Immersive Reader, ClaroRead and BookBot are some of the existing reading assistant applications out there in the market. This project implements a rational unified process or RUP as the methodology. The requirements are elicited from the collaborators via online interview.
